Optimizing WordPress for Search Engines

1. Optimize your titles

By default, WordPress usually puts the title of your blog before the actual post title. Since most search engines only display the first 50-64 characters of your <title> tag, you want the actual blog post title to come first.

Always be sure that the title of your post comes before anything else. Two main reasons are:

1. Search engines will like you more if the title of the post comes first. This helps them put more importance to the keywords in the title.

2. A descriptive and optimized title is one of the most important aspects of your page SEO. The title lets the search engine and users know exactly what this page is about before they visit it.

Use the All In One SEO plugin to keep the proper title formats over an entire blog without having to edit any template files. The above screenshot shows the settings we currently use on WPSwitch.

2. Use good meta descriptions

Most bloggers who use WordPress never do much on the SEO side for meta descriptions because they believe that the auto generated descriptions that comes standard with WordPress is good enough; but that’s not truly the case if you’re concerned about effective keyword indexing on search engines.

Your best chance of getting a high ranking on a per-post basis is by manually typing in a good description for every article you write. Again, I would suggest using the All In One SEO plugin as it allows you to do this very easily. By combining a keyword-rich title with a matching description, you are bound to see an increase in search traffic.

As you can see in the two screenshots above, by optimizing meta descriptions, one of our pages is able ranked highly (withing the first 5-10 results in Google) for a particular search term. Now that you know the importance of a detailed and keyword-rich description, I hope you see some great results.

3. Rewrite your URLs with permalinks

Permalinks are enhancements to your existing URLs that can improve search engine optimization by presenting your post, page, and archive URLs as something like:

http://sixrevisions.com/tools/managing-your-fonts/

rather than

http://sixrevisions.com/?p=423

Changing the default web addresses/URLs that WordPress generates to something more readable is effective to search engine optimization because it is presumed that URLs are taken into consideration when indexing and prioritizing search results. Often, these URLs are called "pretty URLs" because they’re much more readable and gives the users a clue as to what the web page will be about (as in the above comparison of URLs).

Making your permalinks friendlier and readable requires little more than a short trip to your WordPress admin panel. Once you are there, go to Settings > Permalinks and edit the settings as shown in this image below:

I prefer to include the category in my title and write the URLs like this:

/%category%/%postname%

This would result in a format that looks like:

http://example.com/the-category/the-post-title

if you want it even shorter you can exclude the category and just use the following value for the Custom Structure setting:

/%postname%/

If you are now just setting up a new WordPress site, then you are set to go. If your site has been up for a while, than I suggest using the redirection plugin so that your visitors will not get the 404 page after you rewrite your URLs to pretty URLs.

4. Use breadcrumbs

Using breadcrumbs on a WordPress site is often overlooked but can be a huge benefit for your readers and for SEO. Links with good key words that relate to the post topic and links to internal web pages is one of the ways search engines determine the relevance of a web page to search terms.

By using breadcrumbs, you make it easier for the readers to navigate and help the search engines to discover the structure of your website. On WPSwitch, we use the Breadcrumbs Plugin written by Joost De Valk. It only takes about five minutes to set up. (Find more helpful WordPress plugins).

5. Generate an XML Sitemap for search engines

An XML Sitemap is a listing of all the pages and posts on your website. This helps the search engine crawlers get a machine-readable structure of your websites. Having a properly structured sitemap has great benefits in the search engines.

Thanks to the massive amount of plugins, generating a sitemap with WordPress is super easy. I suggest using the XML Sitemaps.

This plugin will generate a special XML sitemap that will assist search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo and Ask.com in more extensively and accurately indexing your posts and pages. The plugin supports various WordPress generated pages as well as custom URLs. Additionally, it notifies all major search engines every time you create a post about the new content by pinging them.

6. Describe your post images meaningfully

Another often-neglected item in WordPress SEO is using proper and keyword-accurate alt and title attributes with images in a post or page. Adding a short description of your image using proper keywords can boost your search engine hits through image searches like the one from Google Images. Since you are using WordPress, adding alt and title attribute values to images is easy.

While saving your image, be sure to give a short and simple name with a dash between each keyword. For example, if you have a picture of a California Redwood tree, name it appropriately, such as california-redwood-tree.jpg or california_redwood_tree.jpg instead of something vague and non-descriptive like postimage03.jpg or screenshot20.jpg.

Once you place your image in a WordPress post or page, it will automatically use the title given as the proper alt description.

If it does not fill it in automatically, you can type a description in the title input field. By implementing these image attributes, it will also make it easier for people who use a screen reader to browse your site.

In summary: don’t neglect your images, name them properly, and assign meaningful title and alt attributes to them.

7. Link to related posts

One favorable method for helping search engines find content that is relevant to a given web page is adding a "related posts" section that links to other posts that have a connected subject.

By doing so, you also have the primary benefit of showing your readers other posts that they may want to read as well.

Many WordPress plugins will automatically generate a list of related posts for each of your posts. There are way to many too mention here, but you can find a list in the WordPress plugins section at WordPress.org just by searching "related posts".

WPSwitch currently usees the Yet Another Related Posts Plugin and it works very well. This is our favorite because it gives you a templating system that allows control over how the related posts are displayed.

8. Use good keywords in post headings

Search engines give more weight to keyword items depending on what type of heading that is being used. To get the most juice out of your titles, make sure the post title is an <h1>.

The name of your blog should only be an <h1> on your front page. On single, post, and category pages, it should be no more than an <h3>, some even choose to use other HTML elements such as a <p> element to keep the markup semantic. The title of your site does not need to carry as much weight as the topic you are writing about.

To make sure your site name is only an <h1> on the home page, you can use the code below and modify it to work with your theme in the header.php file. This checks to see if you are on the home page or other pages and decides what heading tag to use. Most people use this link for the logo of the site linking back to the index.

When fixing your headings on posts or pages find the code that looks like this:

Headings are super easy to edit and are found in the single.php and page.php and various archive pages of your WordPress theme. If your current theme does not use headings in this manner, I suggest you take a few minutes to make this easy change.

9. Avoiding duplicate content with robots.txt

With WordPress showing the same posts on multiple pages like the index, tag pages, archives, author pages, and category pages, it is very easy to have duplicate content. Duplicate content, in the eyes of search engines, is frowned upon. By creating a robots.txt file, you can completely avoid this issue.

This is directly from the current Robots.txt we’re using over at WPSwitch. If you use this, be sure to change the Disallow: /c/ to whatever category structure you are using like /category/, for example.

We also disabled indexing of all .js, css, and .inc files that shouldn’t be search-engine crawlable.

A much easier way if you are not code-savvy is to use the Robots Meta plugin. This modifies the default one made by WordPress from your original install.

1. smush.it!

smush.it! makes optimization of your images a breeze. Created by Stoyan Stefanov and Nicole Sullivan, smush.it! is a tool that is available as a Firefox extension, a bookmarklet, or as a simple web-based application (hosted by Yahoo!). It takes in most types of image formats, and automatically converts GIFs to PNGs (because they’re virtually the same, only that PNGS weigh a whole lot less).

2. RIOT

RIOT – which stands for Radical Image Optimization Tool – is an image optimizer for Windows users that is available as a standalone application or as an extension of IrfanView. It supports inputs in JPG, PNG, and GIF files and has the ability to strip out image metadata for further reduction of file bloat. It also has some basic image-editing utilities such as pan, zoom, and rotate, and flip built in.

3. PNGOUT

Created by game programmer Ken Silverman, PNGOUT is a popular, free, and no-frills tool for lossless optimization of your images. PNGOUT can run in the command-line or Windows Run dialog box. It has a robust set of options so that you can easily customize the way your files are compressed. It takes most of the popular image file formats (such as JPG, GIF, and PNG).

4. Online Image Optimizer

The creator says that PNGCrushrrr is best used on PNG-24 files.

4. YouGetSignal.com

At YouGetSignal.com you will find a proper collection of useful tools when you are analyzing a hosting provider. Use reverse IP domain check to find other hosted websites, WHOIS lookup to find out who owns a domain, Visual Trace Route to see where a website’s host server is located and other useful tools. With its own in-house network tools YouGetSignal.com is a great place to get more knowledge about a web host.

5. SamSpade.org

It is similar to WhoIs.com but with more detailed information. SamSpade allows you to find out who is hosting a certain website by simple typing in its domain name or IP address. It also gives you access to contact information, name servers, domain expiration date, and more juicy tidbits geeks love.

6. GeoTool

Some of the tools on the internet do not seem to have been designed with the user in mind, but Geotool is not one of them. With Geotool you can check up where all online businesses (from Amazon to your neighbor’s home business) have their hosting situated. In an instant, you can see details of the city where the server is situated, its IP Address, ISP and the region of the server. It is important information to know since websites should have their servers located where most of their traffic comes from.

11 Tips to Reduce Server Load and Save Bandwidth

01. Use CSS Text Instead of Images

Images make your Web pages slower and consumes a lot of bandwidth of your server. Instead of using a background image, use the CSS code. For example if you want to use plain red background in your website then use CSS code background-color:#F00 instead of a red-bg.jpg. With CSS, you can set the background color or background image of any CSS element.
These is a nice tutorial on CSS-Tricks.com about how wisely you can use your background images to reduce server load.

02. Optimizing Your Images

More than half of the bandwidth on most websites is used by images and optimizing images is the best way to improve the bandwidth used on your web server. Optimize your images for the internet and shrink their sizes as well, never use bitmap files (.bmp) as they are HUGE (mostly in MBs). You should use jpeg (.jpg) or gif (.gif) files for images as these are optimized for the internet. A good rule of thumb is to strive for no one image being larger than 10 Kb. This is especially hard with animations, but if you can do it, you’ll notice remarkable difference in bandwidth used of your server. There are various image conversion programs/softwares available all over the internet and there are various optimization programs too, be sure to get an optimization program that will be able to retain the images quality while drastically reducing its size.
If you’re using Photoshop, use can compress your images by ‘Save for Web & Devices’ (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S) option to optimize it for minimum bandwidth. When you have an image with lots of colours, you should go for JPEG or PNG. Play around with the quality to change the file size.

03. Compress your CSS by shorthand CSS properties

CSS files can be pretty big, with lots of useless breaks and spaces. CSS shorthand properties are great! They’re a great way to reduce the amount of code contained in a CSS document, allowing for faster download times and easier editing. For example you can use

04. Remove Unnecessary HTML Code, Tags and White Spaces

You can compresses your page size by removing unnecessary white space in your HTML files even remove comments (if not absolutely necessary) because every extra charecter means extra page size. Whether you use visual HTML editors or notepad, your HTML code contains unnecessary stuff: unneeded spaces, returns, meta tags, default values in HTML elements, etc. They will make your web pages bigger, without serving any real purpose. Bigger web pages takes longer to load, increases data traffic of your web server, and waste precious bandwidth.

05. Use AJAX and JavaScript Libraries

AJAX is a technology for a web page to communicate with a server using JavaScript without reloading the page. In general, related pages on a website consist of much content that is common between them. Using traditional methods, that content would have to be reloaded on every request. However, using Ajax, a web application can request only the content that needs to be updated, thus drastically reducing bandwidth usage and load time.

06. Disable File Hotlinks

Hot Linking term is linking images or downloads from your website to other website(s). Basically the images are on your website and other websites just links image tags to your website, hence stealing your bandwidth. If people are ‘hotlinking’ to your image files, they are using your bandwidth which you will ultimately pay for.

You can stop this from happening by placing a ‘.htaccess’ file in the folder where your images are stored. This will only allow requests from your own pages to display the images – anyone linking to them from outside of your website, or any website you choose, will have the ‘red x’ instead of the image.

You can also use .htaccess generator to disable hotlinking provided by HTMLBasix.

07. Compress your HTML and PHP with GZip

Just like the CSS, your HTML can contain a lot of whitespaces and useless breaks. If you are using PHP then you can use mod_gzip for Apache to compress your content. Mod_gzip is a module for apache (existing on both windows and Unix/Linux versions of apache) that can significantly lower the size of a webpage on the fly, when it is requested by a browser that can understand compressed content (almost all modern browsers do support compression). Remember, the great thing is that the compression on the server is activated only if the browsers requests compressed content, in case the browser does not understand compressed content or does not request for it, the server simply servers plain, uncompressed content!

The easiest is way is by using a .htaccess file. I would recommend using .htaccess method because it’s very simple to implement and by .htaccess file you can further configure server configurations. Now to enable gzip compression add the following line to your .htaccess file.

Or in you can insert order for the PHP compression to work, you should insert the following line on the header of your webpages, on the top that is of your page:

08. Use free images/file webhosting website to host your files

If you want to share (big) files and not let your bandwidth effect by it, host the file on free or paid image/file hosting websites such as Flickr, Pikasa, PhotoBucket, ImageShack, rapidshare.com and megaupload.com. Host the file and place the download link on your own blog or website. This will save a tremendous amount of bandwidth on your server. Before doing this, however, make sure you are permitted by your service provider to do that.

09. Avoiding Attachments Whenever Possible

If the file you’re about to host on your server can be found elsewhere on the net, it maybe better to use the link of that location rather than hosting a copy of the file itself on your server. It will without any doubt cost you extra bandwidth but also increate server load. If nothing else, this will save you some time because you don’t need to upload file on your system.

10. Website Caching

Caching is a method of retrieving data from a ready storage (cache) instead of using resources to generate it every time the same information is needed. Enable caching on your website if it’s not dynamic, will allow the end users computer to read from your server once in a while, the rest of the times it will read from its own backup copies until they expire. Another good idea is to cache your website but you might want to set an expiry date in the HTTP headers so expire headers tell the browser how long it should keep the content in cache. Most of the images on your site never change and it is good idea to keep them cached locally.

There is a wide concept in publisher’s mind that using wordpress means getting maximum traffic from search engines because wordpress is a very good CMS which hardly requires Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Well this concept is not as correct as it sounds. Wordpress also requires some optimization to get max out of search engines. For this purpose i made a list of 10 Important Changes which should be a part of your wordpress blog.

1. Use a sitemap generator and generate XML sitemaps like twice a week.

2. Use an Ideal Robot.txt File which do the following:

Points to the sitemap in first line.
Disallow unnecessary pages, folders so search engines get to your content instead of wasting time and getting less important stuff.

3. Using rel="nofollow" Attribute in outgoing or less important links.

This Attribute tells the search engine bots not to follow the specific link or do not share that page’s Rank with this link. This is a very important tip , you can control your site’s SEO and Page rank by just using proper nofollow attributes. Here is a post i wrote earlier which can show you how to control your page rank and seo by using nofollow. Ok, the Less Important links includes links like Read more.. , Click here etc. This can be done by editing the template files easily.
Some plugins which we use in Wordpess blogs requires a must nofollow and we never thought about that. Here is a very cool example. You are using the easy retweet plugin and Retweet buttons are shown on start of every post even on your homepage. Lets say you have 10 posts blocks on your homepage and have 10 retweet buttons on it link to twitter.com !!! that means there are ten outgoing links, you are sharing your site’s page rank and getting lesser visibility in search engine. it can be nofollow from its settings.

4. Proper URL and Title Structure

It is the most important part which we neglect while publishing a post. Lets take a simple example. I am about ot publish a post lets say.
10 Awesome Graphics Designs and Digital Artworks the URL would be :

www.yoursite.com/category/10-awesome-graphics-designs-and-digital-artworks

Seems pretty much alright, right? Well..here u miss about 30% of your visibility!!
A simple reason using STOP WORDS in title and URL are the worst idea u can think up of. !! AND is a stop word. About the url why make it so long using extra stuff in it like the word 10 , and etc. Trust me no one will search for your content in search engines with these words 10 graphics design. If they look for that they will search graphics designs etc.
So get rid of 10 , and from your URL. Here is how they should be:

Title: 10 Awesome Graphics Designs n Digital Artworks
URL: www.yoursite.com/category/awesome-graphics-designs-digital-artworks/

Makes sense? well i don’t even use the category name in the URL structure to make it smaller and more powerful!

5. Using Keywords and Meta Description:

Ok, i have noticed that most of the bloggers use very tiny keywords. Well, guys small get a habit of using long tail keywords,because with them u get traffic for life time. Lets take the example of that above title post. keywords/tags which bloggers normally select are: graphics, design, digital, artworks. Why don’t you spice them up a bit to get even more traffic? If i would do it , I would use these keywords:

Graphics, Design, Digital Artworks, Graphic Designs, Digital Graphics.

I actually spread the same keywords with order and words variation!!

About meta description keep it below 160 characters and add your keywords in it as well as possible like each keyword should be mentioned at least once.

6. Automatic SEO Plugin for Wordpress

Well, I have used several plugins to test which one is good and the only plugin which satisfied me is Headspace2 SEO. I Recommend it.

7. On post page title of post should be written in Heading 1 (H1). and its very important to use your keywords in h2, h3 and h4 if possible.

8. Title and ALT Attribute in Links:

Ok, this is an important part which none of us actually look at. Title and alt attributes in links plays an important role in telling search bots that what this link or image is about.
Title and alt attributes are written like this if you are unaware of it:

<a href="link…" title=”keyword name or what it is about">Keyword</a>

<img src="path to image" alt="what image is about" />

My site gets 10% of its traffic from Google image search!! Because I use proper alt attribute.
Consider this example!! Like the graphics design post we discussed above. Your post consists of 10 Images. That means not much text to get good ranking and visibility in search engines. So why not use alt attribute in an optimized way!! in 10 images add alt tags with picture name + keyword/tag.

For example, the image name is abcd. i will add the alt attribute as alt="abcd design" or abcd graphics etc. That means in 10 places on your page’s source code your keywords are used! I think you get my point.

9. Avail Wordpress ping facility to get max exposure and inbound links

Hotlinking merupakan pencurian bandwidth melalui penggunaan sebuah image yang akan dipasang pada suatu halaman pada website lain, sehingga bandwidth dari website asal akan tersedot bila image yang dipasang pada website lain itu dibuka.
Atau secara simple bisa diterjemahkan, ada orang lain yang mengkopi link image dari website kita dan menempatkannya pada website miliknya.

Memang tidak terlalu banyak memakan bandwith akan tetapi hal ini cukup mengganggu dan mungkin kita bisa memberi sedikit pelajaran kepada si Pelaku :D...

Kita akan melakukan beberapa praktek ringan.

1. Ketik kode berikut dan simpan dengan nama gambar.php

9 Useful Javascript Syntax Highlighting Scripts

Syntax highlighting is very important especially when we want to show our code example on the blog. By enabling the syntax highlighting on the blog, readers can read the code blocks easier.

There are a lot of free and useful syntax highlighting scripts around us. Most of the scripts are written using Javascripts, though some of them are powered by other programming languages such as Phyton or Ruby.

Today, we are going to look into 9 Syntax Highlighting Scripts that powered by Javascript.

1. SyntaxHighlighter

I believe this is the most common syntax highlighting script used by most of us. It supports a lot of different languages and you can easily create new "brush" for your language if it is not supported by default. Check out the custom brushes list compiled by Abel Braaksma.

2. SHJS

SHJS stands for Syntax Highlighting in Javascript. It uses language definations from GNU Source-highlight and support a lot of different programming languages. SHJS has been tested and support major browsers sych as Firefox 2 and 3, IE 6 and 7, Opera 9.6, Safari 3.2 and Chrome 1.0.

3. beautyOfCode

beautyOfCode is a jQuery plugin for syntax highlighting. It uses the SyntaxHighlighter scripts by Alex Gorbatchev and makes it more XHTML-compliant.

4. Chili

Chili is a jQuery code syntax highlighting plugin. It comes bundled with recipes for a lot of languages and supports many configuration options.

5. Lighter.js

Lighter.js is a free syntax highlighting plugin for MooTools. Using lighter.cs is as simple as adding a single script to your webpage.

6. Highlight.js

highlight.js is easy to use and supports a lot of programming languages. It has some plugins for easily integrations to other CMS, forum or blog.

7. DlHighlight

DlHighlight is a simple syntax highlighting scripts that supports only 4 programming languages: JavaScript, CSS, XML, HTML.

8. Google Code Prettify

Google Code Prettify a Javascript module and CSS file that allows syntax highlighting of source code snippets in an html page. It is the scripts wich powers code.google.com.

9. JUSH
